The tech support guy was very rude and basically said this speed is normal and "broadband". I tested everywhere including in house, on the road, airport etc. I've own a Verizon data card for over a year now and the connection speed is becoming extremely slow. He also tried to come up with excuses such as you are indoor although he had to agree that my signal strength was good. The avg download is about 400K and upload 140K. These are significantly slower than what I was promised at the store and the results of my tests when I first bought it (800K/400K).I called Verizon. He also said as long as you could connect, you couldn't argue because there was no promise of the speed on the contract. (So basically even if your speed was 1K, they wouldn't see a problem with it).My conclusion, I will never use Verizon again.
Originally I had my sights set on the 595U, but due to stocking at my local store I had to settle on the UM150, Great device with a useless (to me) SD card option. I live out in the country so there aren't a lot of options for me as far as high speed internet goes. WISPs (none in my area). I've tried a couple of the other USB EVDO adapters namely the UM150 and the USB720. Closer to the tower I'm sure that this would be a superior device, but for my circumstances, I'll pass. And finally, 3(.5)G service providers.
Note: Instead of a built in antenna this device uses a battery to boost the signal. Satellite.decent speeds hurt by latency. I ended up returning it to get the device I thought I wanted in the 595U. After some mulling around I went with Verizon. Sprint wasn't offering their 3G service in my area. To be fair, this device does consistently deliver lower ping times than the previous devices I've tried by 30-50 ms, only problem with that is now I experience an average of 25% packet loss.
Hope this helps you decide which direction to go.
I love it because we are living in a very rural area and this works perfectly. Bought this wireless modem and it was very easy to setup. All you have to do is load the software, plug in the usb connector to the usb port on your computer and you are up and running. I am able to take my computer with me and through the Verizon wireless network, which is just about everywhere, I can access my email and work. I highly suggest buying this product.
